UKRI policy

If you have an award from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) or one of its councils, you must follow its open access requirements when publishing your research. This applies to: 

peer-reviewed research articles submitted for publication on or after 1 April 2022, which have to be made immediately OA via Gold or Green routes using a CC-BY licence (CC-BY-ND on a specific case-by-case basis). Gold OA in hybrid journals will no longer be possible except via Transformative Agreements or Transformative Journals. Find out how to make your research article OA on the UKRI website.

monographs, book chapters and edited collections (excluding trade books) published on or after 1 January 2024 have to be OA within 12 months of publication via Gold or Green routes. CC-BY licence is preferred but others allowed. Find out how to make your monograph, book chapter or edited collection open access on the UKRI website.

UKRI are increasing their OA funding up to £46.7m per year to support its open access policy. Open access publication costs for research articles in-scope of the policy are supported via an open access block grant to research organisations. Open access publications costs for monographs, book chapters and edited collections (long-form publications) in-scope of the policy are supported by a dedicated open access fund that research organisations can apply to.
