Welcome to Evidence & Policy's new Editors-in-Chief

We are delighted to announce that Dr Katherine Smith and Dr Mark Pearson are joining the Evidence & Policy team as the Journal’s new Editors-in-Chief from January 2018.

Katherine (Kat) Smith is Reader in Social Policy, Director of the Global Public Health Unit and Co-Director of the Centre for Science, Knowledge and Policy at the University of Edinburgh. Over the past ten years Dr Smith’s research has been dedicated to the construction, circulation and impact on policy of academic and other 'expert' knowledges. She is particularly interested in the tension between efforts to improve the use of evidence in policy and efforts to strengthen democratic engagement.

Mark Pearson is Senior Lecturer in Implementation Science and Knowledge Mobilisation at the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre at the University of Hull. Dr Pearson’s research focuses on the development and evaluation of knowledge mobilisation and implementation strategies in health and social care systems. He is particularly interested in critically applying and developing action-oriented, theory-driven approaches that can genuinely engage with research users, such as realist evaluation and synthesis.

Asked about their vision for the future of Evidence & Policy the new Editors-in-Chief observed, “Knowledge mobilisation, implementation science, and research impact are all crucial areas for public- and policy-engaged academics and practitioners. We relish the opportunity of working together on Evidence & Policy to advance knowledge of how to improve the democratically legitimate use of evidence in policy and practice. Evidence & Policy will take a lead role in developing the transdisciplinary field of knowledge translation, enabling sectors including education, health, social care, criminal justice, and environment and development to learn from one another.”

The Evidence & Policy team are also pleased to be joined by two new Associate Editors, Blane Harvey and Arnaldo Pellini.

Our profound gratitude is due to Annette Boaz and David Gough, the former Managing Editors, for their expert leadership of the Journal in its formative years, and we look forward to building on their legacy with our new Editors-in-Chief.
