Gillian Abel is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Population Health at the University of Otago, New Zealand. As the leading international expert on the decriminalisation of sex work and its impacts, Abel brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the process. She led the research undertaken in the aftermath of decriminalisation to evaluate the impacts of decriminalisation and has published on the New Zealand model in a plethora of peer reviewed journals and edited books. Gillian Abel is the lead editor of ‘Taking the Crime Out of Sex Work’, the only existing book on the decriminalisation of sex work in New Zealand. She regularly reviews articles for 12 different journals; has reviewed five sex work-related book proposals; and has written endorsements for three sex work-related books.
